Working hard for our community

During the last five years as your MP Greg has worked hard to make our community even better than it already is - improving local transport links and our vital health services and supporting those most in need.

During this time Greg has worked hard for our community with campaigns to:

  • Build the new hospital at Pembury: This is now rising from the ground at a tremendous rate. With 512 single rooms it will be the best in Britain
  • Get the A21 dualled: Greg fought to get the dualling of the A21 between Tonbridge and Pembury and Kippings Cross and Lamberhurst back in the roads programme - after years of delay
  • Protect our back gardens: Greg's Private Members Bill put "garden grabbing" on the national map. Giving communities the right to protect gardens from development was opposed by the government, but is now official Conservative policy
  • Fight for our Post Offices: With the whole community, Greg fought hard to save our Post Offices, which provide such a vital service in our towns and rural villages. He will continue to work hard to support these and other local businesses, especially in these difficult economic times
  • Get better buses: Greg worked with local residents and councillors to transform the 281 service and upgrade the Sherwood Shuttle, getting state of the art new vehicles instead of worn-out old cast-offs
  • Get our trains back on track: Greg's campaign to improve rail services resulted in more trains and station improvements, but the service this winter has been dire - it must improve, and Greg will keep battling until it does
  • Support local volunteering groups: Greg has supported the many thriving voluntary groups that play such a vital role in making life better for so many people. He will always do what he can to support volunteers who give their time to work on behalf of the community
  • Stand up for all constituents: The most important thing Greg does is to fight constituents' corner whenever they need someone on their side

The work continues - Greg's campaigning priorities

Our area is one of the best places in Britain to live. But, together, we can make it even better - there's a lot worth fighting for:

  • Better transport: Our area is becoming notorious for gridlock. I will carry on fighting for the A21 to be dualled and the accident blackspot at Colts Hill to be bypassed. But we also need alternatives to the car - better bus services (especially to the new hospital), reliable trains and more cycleways
  • World class health services: Our new Pembury Hospital will be one of the very best in the world. We need to make sure that our community health services - like mental health services, support for people with dementia, stroke services and community hospitals - are just as excellent
  • Help for the least affluent parts of our area: It is too often overlooked that parts of our community suffer high levels of deprivation and often lack the support that goes to more obviously challenged areas. I will go on fighting to ensure that everyone in our community can realise their potential
  • I'll protect our environment: I'm passionate about our local area - our vibrant towns and villages surrounded by beautiful countryside. I'll continue to fight to protect and enhance our quality of life
  • Standing up for EVERYONE in our community: The most important thing that I do - and what I have enjoyed most - is helping my constituents. Whenever you need someone on your side, I will always be there to help

Nationally - Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change

Greg is the Shadow Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, having previously been Shadow Minister for Charities, Social Enterprises and Volunteering.

Greg is responsible for two landmark policy papers in Energy and Climate Change policy: the Low Carbon Economy and Rebuilding Security, which set out how a Conservative Government will make Britain a leading player in the low carbon economy. As Shadow Charities Minister he launched Voluntary Action in the 21st Century a green paper which showed how voluntary action can help build a strong society.

MPs' Expenses

Greg has always taken his responsibilities to constituents very seriously. Throughout the last parliament the expenses that he claimed were among the lowest of all MPs (476th out of 647 MPs). The official review of MPs' expenses concluded that there were "no issues" with any of his claims and -unlike most MPs - he was not asked to make any repayments.

Greg has always believed that MPs' pay and allowances should be set completely independently and follow normal business practice. At long last, from May 2010, this will happen.

Biography

Born in Middlesbrough in 1967, Greg attended the local St Peter's Comprehensive, South Bank. He went on to study Economics at Cambridge University and was awarded his PhD at the London School of Economics.

Before entering politics, Greg worked for the Boston Consulting Group, one of the world's top business strategy firms, and was posted to the USA, Mexico, South America and Iceland, as well as working for clients in the UK.

Greg was Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry - the Rt Hon Ian Lang MP - from 1996 until the General Election in 1997. Subsequently, he was appointed the BBC's Controller, Commercial Policy.

Before becoming an MP, Greg was Director of Policy for the Conservative Party from March 2001 for three successive Leaders - William Hague, Iain Duncan Smith and Michael Howard - before being elected to Parliament for Tunbridge Wells in 2005.
